ABS Broadcast invests in solution from ATG DANMON

...
ATG Danmon, one of Europe's most experienced broadcast systems integrators, announces that ABS Broadcast has chosen Dalet AmberFin high quality transcoding and file-player software at the core of its broadcast playout facility in west London.

"A very large proportion of content from our clients arrives as files, either on couriered storage media or, more commonly now, online," comments ABS Broadcast founder and CEO Sass Jahani. "The challenge was to find an efficient way to augment our existing infrastructure so that we could transcode files for playout of content from and to various codecs and wrappers. Dalet's Amberfin transcoding platform was chosen after a careful study of the available technologies. It incorporates ingest, mastering, quality control and review functions which can all be accessed via a single graphic user interface.

"AmberFin Play enables us to review shared assets at any point in the workflow," adds Mukund Patel, Head of Technology & Engineering. "We are running the software on hardware located in our server room and controlled from the operations control room. The AmberFin modules in combination have proved a highly effective and successful solution to our file-creation and workflow requirements."

"I am very pleased that Amberfin's transcoding and file player platforms are able to provide ABS Broadcast with a complete file preparation solution for their playout operation," says Chris Elson, ATG Danmon Product Sales Manager. "These platforms meet the demands of a 24/7 operation whilst maintaining the highest image quality and workflow efficiency."

ATG Danmon produces video ingest, post production and archiving system for the Royal Opera House

ATG Danmon produces video ingest, post production and archiving system for the Royal Opera House
...

Royal_Opera_House_Covent_Garden

ATG Danmon (www.atgdanmon.co.uk) has designed and installed an integrated system providing video recording, storage and archiving together with a media asset management system for the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

The ROH produces 12 live cinema events each season. These are live relays of stage performances. The performances are broadcast live to cinemas in Europe and distributed immediately to other parts of the world. Additionally, they regularly live stream from the main house, Linbury theatre or other studios in the building. The requirement was for each production to be made available for further use by departments within ROH, and externally.

With this new facility, the ROH media staff are able to ingest each performance into a production server linked to an online storage archive and a near-online data tape library, with the system providing the ability to search and retrieve content.

Content access is controlled from Square Box Systems' CatDV media asset management software. The CatDV media asset management system provides a scalable cross-platform database that can handle a wide range of content file types. It creates a catalogue of media assets, including video, still images, audio files and documents. Operators can log metadata to make content searchable using key words as well as clip titles. CatDV provides analysis and transcoding of media files with advanced logging tools, sequence editing and integration with non-linear editing applications.

The system also includes a Rohde & Schwarz Venice server which manages the HD-SDI ingest, studio and channel playout as well as file- based tasks such as file import, transcoding and media transfer operations.

ATG Danmon integrated a Studio Network Solutions (SNS) EVO shared storage server and Quantum LTO-8 long term storage tape drives with Archiware backup management into the system.

The SNS EVO is a complete, networked, high-performance shared storage workflow server designed for video/film/TV, graphics, VFX, animation, audio, and broadcast production environments. EVO servers are produced in various sizes and capacities and features include built-in SAN and NAS, automatic project file locking, project/bin sharing, asset tagging, cloud integration, and LDAP/AD. Up to 960 terabytes per managed system can be accommodated.

Quantum's LTO-8 tape drive accommodates up to 30 terabytes of data per cartridge with compressed transfer speeds of up to 2.7 terabytes per hour. Content is protected by AES 256-bit data encryption security. LTO-8 drives are also LTO-7 playback compatible.

ATG Danmon worked in close partnership with the ROH project team to successfully deliver the project. This included integrating the system into the existing IT network and a series of workshops and training to ensure that the workflow requirements were being fully met.

ATG Danmon, part of the Danmon Group (www.danmon.com), has been at the forefront of the transition to the file-based technology now used throughout the industry. It has also assisted many clients in the construction of IT-based automated file workflow systems, high-definition studios, master control rooms and playout facilities, as well as the upgrade of existing SD systems to HD and UHD. By embracing tomorrow's technology, ATG Danmon delivers maximum value through close co-operation with suppliers and customers, leading to mutually beneficial long-term relationships.

ATG Danmon also offers a comprehensive range of products and services including transcoding and automated workflow management, accelerated global file transfer, media workflow-design, project-planning, equipment installation, software-configuration, commissioning, documentation, on-site training plus ongoing support and maintenance.

With offices in Asia, Denmark, Germany, the Middle East, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom, the Danmon Group thinks globally and acts locally to support customers with its highly experienced sales and engineering teams.

Accompanying images show video production suite in the UHD OB vehicle with trailer exterior, plus external view.

January 21st 2019 – ATG Danmon will exhibit its full range of systems integration services on stand G30-6 at BVE 2019 in London's ExCel, February 26-28. These include consultancy, project planning, workflow design, system installation, testing and commissioning, documentation, training and technical support.

"BVE has proved a useful venue over the years for meeting existing customers and making new contacts," says ATG Danmon Managing Director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "We will be promoting our skills as a project management partner with proven experience in all aspects of systems design, implementation, testing and post-installation maintenance."

"A key strength of ATG Danmon is its ability to recommend and deliver the best possible solution for each project, based on hands-on experience over many years combined with ongoing study of new technical and operational trends. That experience embraces hybrid SDI/IP infrastructures, cloud-based workflows and storage, and virtualisation. We are also able to draw on the capabilities of partner companies within the Danmon Group to create solutions for every element of the media chain. Our capabilities extend to OB vehicles as well as flyaway systems that can operated from practically any location."

"The operational possibilities increase with every passing year as technology becomes available  to incorporate into our designs. One example is a portable system which is recording 4K raw video for a client who recognises that capturing at the highest possible production quality allows great flexibility in the use of the material."

Recent ATG Danmon projects have included the design, supply and integration of equipment into two news studios and a news presentation room for the School of Journalism at one of Britain's leading universities. The facilities simulate the functionality and processes of a real broadcast environment, the output being used for academic review.

For BBC Scotland in Glasgow, ATG Danmon modernised a television gallery assigned to the production of bulletin-style news programmes. Careful co-ordination was vital to ensure the daily broadcast schedule could continue as normal.

In Q3 2018, ATG Danmon was selected to design, assemble and integrate two mobile video production systems for one of Europe's longest established parliamentary television channels. These allow recording and live broadcasting from the various committee rooms located within the government buildings. The units replaced old-technology 625-line equipment and allow proceedings to be televised in 1080i.

One of Europe's most prestigious stage production theatres commissioned ATG Danmon to design and integrate a media asset management and archive system. The theatre records many of its performances for relay to viewing theatres around the world. The new installation includes a digital server which will be used for ingest, post production and playout."

ATG Danmon also finalised a storage system for a London-based training centre, enabling its creative media team to archive and access very large amounts of video content quickly and efficiently. Occupying just 4U of space, the system's 16 bays can accommodate 80 drives.

Newsroom upgrade and virtual studio tracking projects are now in progress, plus a production studio for one of the country's most leading social media video specialists.

ATG Danmon announces the completion of a full broadcast-quality news studio facility for Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. The project coincides with a relocation to new city-centre premises situated next to BBC facilities. Cardiff Uni-versity will use the facility to train the next generation of television, radio, online and printed-media journalists.

"We were invited to propose a turnkey solution based on an outline specification provided by the university," explains ATG Danmon Managing Director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "The project comprised a large TV studio and dedicated gallery, a smaller TV studio with its as-sociated gallery, plus a broadcast newsroom. Both galleries connect via SDI to Vizrt me-dia, graphics and automation. Avid iNEWS is also integrated."

"The system also links to a news presentation suite where a remotely controlled camera and two-way video feed allow the newsreader to talk to a newsroom reporter. The sys-tems simulate the functionality and processes of a real broadcast environment, the out-put being used for academic review."

"We worked in collaboration in partnership with Cardiff University staff to design and inte-grate a complete solution that kept within the organisation's budget and met or exceed-ed the specified level of functionality. The project includes a full guarantee and the option of long-term support."

Systems designed for the large studio and gallery include studio lighting under control from a DMX console, gallery furniture, vision and audio monitoring with 55 inch displays, two-way gallery/studio communications, wireless presenter talkback and teleprompt.

The newly installed equipment was integrated with existing elements including dual light-ing rails, three studio cameras, Viz studio automation, a Ross vision mixer and Yamaha audio mixing desk.

The smaller of the two TV studios is a single-camera version of the large studio, with simi-lar infrastructure. ATG Danmon provided and integrated a single-rail light support with ca-bling, Viz Opus compact-control-room automation and a Yamaha audio mixing desk.

For the central apparatus room, ATG Danmon recommended and integrated a main and backup Ross Ultrix router mainframe including studio to central apparatus room cabling, Ross glue, Blackmagic OpenGear analog to SDI conversion and Blackmagic Teranex SD/HD/UHD standards conversion. Two-way camera and control system, broadcast-quality monitors and talkbacks were provided,

Among specific system components were Cirrolite lighting, a Blackmagic URSA Broadcast camera with Fuji lens, Libec tripod, Blackmagic multiview and studio floor monitors, Shure wireless microphones, Blackmagic HyperDeck video recording, NEC picture monitors, KRK control room loudspeakers, Sonifex intercoms, Autoscript WinPlus-IP teleprompting, plus Custom Consoles control desks and monitor mounts.

Training in the operation and maintenance of the systems installed was provided on completion of the project which also includes a full guarantee and the option of long-term technical support.

ATG Broadcast will promote its full range of systems planning, design, installation, commissioning and post-installation support

ATG Broadcast will promote its full range of systems planning, design, installation, commissioning and post-installation support...
ATG Broadcast will promote its full range of systems planning, design, installation, commissioning and post-installation support services on stand K31 at Broadcast Video Expo 2013, London ExCel, 26-28 February 2013. Representatives attending the show will include Christoffer Kay, Tim Felstead, Clive Northen, Dave Whitaker, Alastair MacDonald and Jonathan Baker.

"The message we take to BVE centres on the growing popularity of file-based technology from camera lens right through to domestic viewing screen," comments Clive Northen, Chief Operating Officer. "The ATG Broadcast team pioneered the original adoption of file-based content management and is now ideally resourced to build on that long experience right across the production, archiving and transmission chain.

File-based shooting allows fast transfer of content from the point of capture to a news studio, post-production or playout centre, and much faster ingest than is possible with discrete media. We will also be promoting IP-based point-to-point content distribution technology which forms a basis for highly efficient transfer of content from one location to another, regardless of distance.

"In addition to its complete range of systems integration services, the exhibit will include selected products from AmberFin which ATG Broadcast represents as channel partner in the UK and Middle East. These will include the iCR-100-DPP transcoder and iCR-300-DPP media ingest workstation. Apart from their competitive price tags, these new products offer the same support packages and clear upgrade paths as any other AmberFin iCR product.

The iCR-300-DPP media ingest workstation and iCR-100-DPP transcoder are both designed specifically to create high-quality MXF-wrapped AVC-Intra or D10 assets compliant with the AMWA AS-11 specification and Digital Production Partnership guidelines from tape or line sources.

Available as a standalone workstations or scalable enterprise solutions, both systems reflect a design that is optimised for easy integration and operation with proven interoperability in multi-vendor environments. The workstations offer clearly defined, documented and extensible application program interfaces. They benefit from AmberFin’s Unified Quality Control approach, providing automated and manual QC operation.

A British broadcast industry initiative aimed to help broadcasters maximise the benefits of digital production, DPP is an industry collaboration led by ITV, BBC and Channel 4 with the active participation of Channel Five, Sky, S4C and the independent production sector.

ATG Broadcast celebrates 15 years of success in broadcast systems integration

ATG Broadcast celebrates 15 years of success in broadcast systems integration...

ATG Broadcast is celebrating its 15th anniversary with the production of a brochure outlining some of the many contracts won since the company's formation in 1993. The 12-page publication begins with an overview of the rapidly-evolving broadcast market by Managing Director Guy Elliott and a look ahead to the multi-channel HD future.

"ATG Broadcast has expanded from its predominantly UK-focus into a globally active company with clients in mainland Europe, the Middle East and Far East," Guy Elliott comments. "Most broadcasters today are looking beyond using a single-source supplier and quite rightly demand the freedom to source equipment from industry-leading manufacturers rather than being tied to brands within a single corporate group. As an independent systems integrator, ATG Broadcast delivers that freedom and adds the experience of project management teams who understand not just the engineering solutions but the operational environment in which those solutions are used. We also recognise the importance of future-proofing given that the market for programme content is rapidly diverging. ATG BVE 2012

ATG Broadcast at BVE 2012

ATG Broadcast at BVE 2012...
ATG Broadcast will exhibit its full range of systems planning, design, installation, commissioning and post-installation support services on stand B28 at Broadcast Video Expo 2012, in London’s Earls Court, 14-16 February.

“The broadcasting industry is advancing rapidly on three parallel fronts: from standard definition to high definition, from discrete media to server-based content management, and to new modes of television content distribution,” states ATG Broadcast Managing Director Graham Day. “The potential benefits are enormous, both in terms of operational efficiency and in meeting the increasing expectations of consumers viewing on latest-generation 1080-line display screens.

“ATG’s many successes have centred on meeting our clients’ needs not just for the next year or two but for the long term.
Easy expandability is a feature of all our designs, to accommodate additional programme channels as the market for high-quality content expands and to embrace new services such as 1080p/3G, IPTV, web-streaming and video podcasting.

“Talking technology is one thing; designing and delivering practical and future-proof television broadcast systems is quite another. ATG Broadcast systems are working successfully in many of the largest broadcast networks here in the UK, in Scandinavia, mainland Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. We invite BVE visitors to come and discuss not just their
short-term needs but the challenges and opportunities likely to arise through to 2020. It is an exciting picture.”

Recently completed European projects have included:

 *

A high-definition master control room for The Associated Press. Located in Camden, London, the MCR is the international hub of a global video operation. It serves Associated Press clients in many countries as well as
linking with a worldwide network of news bureaux.

 *

In partnership with BBC Studios and Post Production, a major upgrade of Studio Three at Television Centre in London. Studio Three has been converted from standard definition to 1080 50p high definition, becoming the
fifth permanent HD studio at Television Centre.
Projects currently in progress include:

*

An international and regional newsroom for South African Broadcasting Corporation in Johannesburg. With over 1,100 users and scheduled for completion in April, this will be the world’s fifth largest networked ENPS installation.

*

HD channel playout infrastructure for Ericsson Broadcast Systems at TV4 Sweden’s network’s headquarters in Stockholm. This will replace equipment currently being used to manage playout of TV4 HD which launched in May 2007 on the Canal Digital satellite and Com Hem cable television platform.
* A 3D studio and Apple Final Cut Pro editing facility for Al Jazeera Children’s Channel at Education City in Doha.

ATG Broadcast is also an active distributor of selected third-party video and audio products. In this capacity, it will be promoting the NTP Technology range of advanced high-reliability digital routers, Viewcast streaming media capture cards and encoders, and Amberfin file-based media ingest and transcoding solutions.

ATG Broadcast announces a new addition to its management team with the appointment of Clive Northen as Chief Operating Officer. He is based at the company’s administrative and engineering centre in Letchworth, reporting to Managing Director Graham Day.

Clive Northen commenced his broadcast industry career in 1994 on the staff of Worldwide Television News at its headquarters in the Interchange Building, Camden. He was appointed Bureaux Equipment Manager when the Associated Press acquired WTN.

In 2003 he joined Charter Broadcast as Client Manager to develop its rental and flyaway-system activity, progressing to Presteigne as Operations Manager where he was involved in coordinating the company’s relocation from New Malden to Gatwick.

ATG Danmon Sees Increasing Demand for Broadcast Systems Integration Services Throughout 2018

ATG Danmon Sees Increasing Demand for Broadcast Systems Integration Services Throughout 2018...

Russell Peirson-Hagger - Managing Director

Letchworth, Hertfordshire, UK – ATG Danmon reports continuing growth in demand for systems integration services throughout the broadcast industry as well as associated sectors such as corporate, educational and governmental video production.

"2018 saw ATG Danmon successfully completing a large number of projects," comments Managing Director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "Our year's activities started with the fulfilment of the latest in a series of technical upgrades for the London-based UK studios of Brazilian free-to-air commercial television broadcaster Record TV Network. Introduced to us by Vantec, our Portuguese partner within the Danmon Group, Record TV broadcasts to over 150 countries on five continents including about 80% of the European population. The project included the redesign and wiring of the Record TV studio facility plus the installation of video routers, and signal converters. Also integrated into the Record TV production system was audio to PC interfacing, enabling high quality audio communication via Skype TX for Radio."

"Among other significant project completions in Q2 was the modernisation of a television gallery at BBC Scotland in Glasgow, assigned to the production of bulletin-style news programmes. Careful co-ordination was vital to ensure the daily broadcast schedule could continue as normal. This was achieved by installing all the required new equipment in a temporary control room which could be configured and used for staff training before going live. Once that was fully operational, we decommissioned and emptied the legacy control room before moving the complete system in. We achieved the switchover with complete success in little more than half a day. The infrastructure includes new control and playout automation, a large KVM system, a multiscreen display using 55 inch 4K monitor screens, and audio fader control. We also designed and integrated a large control desk configured for use by a five-strong team comprising news editor, teleprompter, producer, director and technical operator."

"In Q3 we secured a contract to design, assemble and integrate two mobile video production systems for one of Europe's longest established parliamentary television channels. These will allow recording and live broadcasting from the various committee rooms located within the government buildings. The units will replace old-technology 625-line equipment and allow proceedings to be televised in 1080i. Both systems are designed to meet very tightly specified requirements, each allowing a high degree of production versatility. They are highly mobile, quick and easy to set up and very logical to operate."

"One of London's leading theatres commissioned us to design and integrate a media asset management and archive system. The theatre records many of its performances for relay to viewing theatres around the world. The new installation includes a digital server which will be used for ingest, post production and playout. A key requirement was the ability to log each performance and add descriptive metadata to permit fast searching of archived content."

"We also finalised a storage system for a London-based training establishment, enabling its creative media team to archive and access very large amounts of video content quickly and efficiently. Occupying just 4U of space, the system's 16 bays can accommodate 80 drives."

"Projects keeping us occupied during Q4 include the upgrading and modernisation of the newsroom for a major UK broadcaster, an SD to HD upgrade for a global television network, plus a new UHD production studio and post suite for a major international corporate."

"2018 was forecast to be the year SDI buckled under pressure from IP. The reality is that IP has simply become another way to get signals from content from one location to another, with obvious attractions for new-builds but less so for the established SD-SDI and HD-SDI broadcasters and supporting service-providers. The industry's eyes should now be on the integration of 4K and potentially 8K into the HD production environment with all the potential that offers for lossless HD cutout from higher resolution sources. It will be interesting to see if the introduction of regular 8K broadcasting in Japan from December 1 proves a sufficient spur for manufacturers to introduce sensibly priced 8K cameras, production equipment and displays."
